What is bonsai potting soil?
Bonsai potting soil, also called bonsai soil or substrate, is a special mix precisely tailored to what a bonsai needs to grow well. Unlike standard potting soil, bonsai potting soil is:
- Good permeability to water
- Rich in minerals
- Structurally stable (does not collapse)
- Airy for a healthy root system
A good soil ensures that the roots can develop well without rotting and that nutrients are optimally absorbed.

What is the difference with regular potting soil?
Although universal potting soil is inexpensive and widely available, it's not suitable for bonsai. Why?
- Retains too much moisture → risk of root rot
- Too little structure → roots get too little air
- Quickly compressible → prevents drainage
Bonsai require an airy and stable substrate that properly regulates water and oxygen. A good soil prevents stress and increases the absorption of bonsai nutrients.

How do you use bonsai potting soil?
When repotting, first carefully remove the old soil from between the roots. Then:

- Place a layer of Fuji sand or coarse grain material at the bottom
- Top up with Akadama or a mixture with Kanuma (for azaleas)
- Press the soil lightly without damaging the roots
- Give plenty of water so that everything settles in well
Repot on average every 1-3 years, depending on the species and age of your tree.
