Bonsai food, also called bonsai fertilizer, is a specially formulated fertilizer that contains essential nutrients for the growth and vitality of bonsai trees. Because bonsai trees grow in relatively small pots with limited soil, nutrients are depleted more quickly than with regular garden plants. Without supplementation, you risk stunted growth and a weakened root system. Proper nutrition ensures that your bonsai:

What types of bonsai food are there?

Liquid bonsai food

Vondrus Expantex Special is aliquid bonsai tree food, developed by the Czech brand Vondrus. It is intended for:

  • General growth support for bonsai trees
  • Promotion of root development
  • Leaf development and branch growth

It usually contains a balanced ratio of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), plus possibly additional trace elements. The exact NPK values are listed on the back of the bottle. This product is a well-known bonsai fertilizer, widely used by bonsai hobbyists and professionals.

Bonsai Elixir Ampoule

Usbonsai elixiris a typical Japanese liquid plant food, often sold under the name 活力液肥 (Katsuryoku Ekihi) by the Yorkey brand. The Dutch translation is "Vitality Liquid Fertilizer." The elixir comes in 10 bottles of 35 ml each.

When and how often do you feed bonsai?

The frequency of fertilization depends on the season, the type of bonsai, and the type of fertilizer you use. As a rule of thumb, you can follow these guidelines:

  • Spring:Weekly liquid feed or organic pellets once a month. This is the growth period, so feeding is crucial.
  • Summer:Fertilizing a little more often is possible, especially with fast-growing plants. However, continue to monitor your tree's response closely.
  • Autumn:Reduce the frequency. Once a month is usually sufficient to replenish reserves.
  • Winter:Don't feed your bonsai while it's dormant. Exception: tropical species that continue to grow indoors may continue to receive a light dose.

Note: Never feed on dry soil. Lightly moisten the soil with water first so the roots can absorb the nutrients better. To distribute the water evenly and evenly throughout your bonsai's soil, we recommend using ourbonsai spray and watering bundleto use.
